| Vacancy: Linux and Jboss Systems Engineer / System Administrator | ||
This role is to perform day-to-day engineering and operations duties on the core systems infrastructure, working with the commercial priorities of the business. The position will report to the Director of Networks, with close day-to-day guidance and co-ordination with the senior team lead.
The Systems Engineering team is responsible for all server and network appliance based infrastructure. This does not include hardware routing or point-to-point networking equipment, although close co-ordination with the Network Engineering team will frequently be required. Some networking infrastructure is performed on Linux servers for which joint responsibility between these teams is assumed.
• Speedy fault resolution and troubleshooting
• Internal trouble tickets (using Request Tracker)
• Maintenance of core services; JBoss, Apache, DHCP, Radius, BIND etc.
• Shared out-of-hours emergency on-call support on a rota basis
• Streamlining and automation of common system administration tasks
• Release of product and service updates from testing, through staging and in to production environments
• Maintain business SLAs; assist in root cause analyses upon any failures
Essential Skills:
• Excellent analytical and diagnostic skills / ability to logically think problems through to a final resolution
• Excellent command of Linux administration
• Strong Jboss experience
• Solid grounding and understanding of IP protocols, including TCP, UDP and ICMP
• Competent bash scripting skills
Highly Desirable Skills:
• Competent using iptables and inventive routing / networking configurations
• Administration of JBoss and Apache Tomcat (ability to delve in to Java code for emergency diagnostics would be an advantage but is not essential)
• Administration and good knowledge of Apache 2.x web server
• Competent ad-hoc scripting abilities in one of the following languages: Perl, Python, Ruby
• Experience of using support ticketing systems like RT, Bugzilla or TRAC
• Good working knowledge of SQL and able to perform SQL queries
• Working knowledge of source and version control systems like Subversion and CVS
• Exposure to SNMP for monitoring and data gathering
Additional Useful Skills:
• MySQL database administration
• Experience of change control requests and procedures
• Experience of open source monitoring software like Zabbix, OpenNMS, Nagios, Zenoss Core, MRTG etc
• Appreciation of XKCD
